In a major upset, longtime Democrat Congressman Bob Etheridge, infamous for putting a young conservative video reporter in a headlock on a Washington D.C. street, lost his race to Tea Party Republican and Registered Nurse Renee Ellmers.

Ellmers ran a strong campaign, including fiery ads accusing Etheridge and Democrats of being soft on Islamo-Fascism and supporting the controversial Ground Zero Mosque in New York City. Etheridge was the only Democrat in North Carolina to be unseated.

Republicans Flip North Carolina House

In a historic shift, Republicans gained control of the North Carolina State House of Representatives, a monumental change after over 100 years of Democratic control. This flip is being described as a “loss of titanic proportions” for the Democrats, who managed to hold on to power for more than a century despite numerous corruption scandals. Republicans now lead both chambers, breaking a 112-year losing streak in the Senate.
