WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden, in a compelling prime-time address from the Oval Office, urged Americans to reject political violence and embrace peaceful resolutions as the nation braces for the upcoming presidential election. This call to action came in the wake of the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump, an event that has further heightened political tensions.

“There is no place in America for this kind of violence — for any violence. Ever. Period. No exception. We can’t allow this violence to be normalized,” Biden declared emphatically. He underscored the importance of maintaining civility, stating, “Political passions can run high, but we must never descend into violence.”

Biden’s address came just days before the Republican National Convention commenced in Milwaukee. The president acknowledged the intensity of the election season and emphasized that, despite differing political views, the core values of democracy—reason, balance, decency, and respect for the rule of law—must prevail over brute force.

The president’s speech lasted about five minutes, during which he reflected on the founding principles of American democracy. “We can do this,” Biden implored. “American democracy — where arguments are made in good faith. American democracy — where the rule of law is respected. Decency, dignity, fair play aren’t just quaint notions; they’re living, breathing realities.”

Earlier on Sunday, Biden condemned the attempted assassination of Trump, describing it as “contrary to everything we stand for as a nation.” He announced an independent security review to understand how such an attack could occur and directed the U.S. Secret Service to reassess security measures for the upcoming Republican National Convention. Despite the attack, Audrey Gibson-Cicchino, the Secret Service’s coordinator for the convention, assured the public that the existing security plans were robust and that officials were “fully prepared.”

The president also took a moment to express his and First Lady Jill Biden’s condolences to the family of Corey Comperatore, a former fire chief who was tragically killed during the Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. “He was protecting his family from the bullets,” Biden said. “God loves him.”

Biden shared that he had a “short but good conversation” with Trump following the shooting and expressed his relief that the former president was recovering well. Trump, echoing Biden’s call for unity, posted on social media, “UNITE AMERICA!”

The attack has significantly impacted Biden’s campaign strategy. In response, the president paused his aggressive political messaging and focused on promoting national unity. Biden’s campaign suspended all outbound communications and pulled television ads following the incident. Additionally, Biden postponed a scheduled trip to Texas, opting for an NBC News interview with Lester Holt at the White House.

Despite these changes, Biden remains committed to his campaign trail, with plans to visit Las Vegas for a campaign event on Wednesday. Vice President Kamala Harris has also adjusted her campaign plans, postponing a trip to Florida initially scheduled for Tuesday.

The weekend attack has added another layer of complexity to an already tumultuous campaign season. Biden’s shaky debate performance on June 27 had already raised concerns within his party, prompting some top surrogates and donors to question his viability as a candidate. Nearly 20 Democratic members of Congress have called for Biden to leave the race while his team scrambles to regain momentum by increasing campaign events and intensifying criticisms of Trump.

In his Sunday address, Biden reiterated the importance of unity and civil discourse. “We’ll debate and we’ll disagree, that’s not going to change,” Biden stated. “But we’ll not lose sight of who we are as Americans.”

The president’s call for unity comes at a critical time, with political tensions and violent rhetoric rising. Investigators are still working to understand the motives behind the attack, and Biden has urged the public not to jump to conclusions.

Despite the challenges ahead, Biden remains focused on his primary goal: defeating Donald Trump in the upcoming election. In a private call with donors, Biden emphasized his determination: “I have one job, and that’s to beat Donald Trump. I’m certain I’m the best person to be able to do that.”

As the nation navigates this period of heightened political tension, Biden’s message is clear: Unity and peaceful resolution are paramount to preserving the principles of American democracy.
