Edward Gonzalez is stepping up to challenge longtime Democratic incumbent Zoe Lofgren in California’s 16th Congressional District, which includes San Jose. As a “Libertarian Republican,” Gonzalez faces an uphill battle, but he’s determined to bring his fiscally conservative and constitutionally focused values to Congress.

Gonzalez is an active member of the Tea Party movement and has participated in various protests advocating for smaller government and personal freedoms. He’s running on a platform that supports constitutionally limited government, emphasizing that government should only protect individual rights, not extend its reach into social programs. His campaign draws on the teachings of Austrian economist Ludwig von Mises, and he enjoys strong backing from Ron Paul supporters. Although running on the GOP ticket, Gonzalez is listed by some Libertarian Party sources as a purely “Libertarian” candidate.

Background

Edward Gonzalez has an impressive military background. He graduated in the top 10% of his class from Officer Candidate School in 2004, receiving his commission as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. He served with the 1st Battalion, 4th Marines at Camp Pendleton, California. During his first deployment as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Gonzalez led amphibious security operations on Iraqi oil platforms as a platoon commander. In his second deployment, he served as an advisor to the Iraqi Army in the al Anbar Province, where his team worked to improve local security and transfer control of over 1,000 km of American battle space to Iraqi forces. He left active duty in 2008 as a Captain.

Gonzalez’s Philosophy

At the core of Gonzalez’s beliefs is the principle that all individuals have the right to life, liberty, and property. He argues that the government’s sole legitimate function is to protect those rights. Gonzalez opposes the use of government power to fund social programs through taxation, which he views as a form of socialism that contradicts the principles of liberty and property rights.

He acknowledges that many governments are not entirely socialist but contain elements of socialism. However, he warns that using tax money to support social programs leads to moral and economic inconsistencies that undermine individual freedoms. Gonzalez’s platform is firmly rooted in limiting government power and promoting personal responsibility and economic freedom.

As a candidate, Edward Gonzalez offers a fresh, libertarian-leaning voice in California’s political landscape, with a focus on reducing government intervention and protecting individual rights. His military service and strong convictions make him a notable contender in the race for Congress.
